Three other MiraCosta faculty will share their immigration stories Thursday as well. Leo Chiang will screen his 2009 documentary вЂњA Village Called Versailles,вЂќ about social and environmental activism by Vietnamese immigrants in the Versailles neighborhood of New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. The movie, вЂњSeadrift,вЂќ is still being edited, but Ha and Tsai will show a 17-minute section of the documentary at ThursdayвЂ™s forum.ДЄlso Thursday, filmmaker S. Her father also offered to serve as a translator on the film. But Ha grew up in the community and agreed to serve as a liaison. Tsai, who is Taiwanese-American and not from Texas, was struggling to win the trust of fishermen for interviews. She started teaching sociology in 2004 and joined MiraCostaвЂ™s faculty three years later.Д®ight years ago, Ha was invited to write a chapter on the Vietnamese fishermen for Irwin TangвЂ™s book вЂњAsian Texans: Our Histories and Our Lives.вЂќ That chapter caught the eye of filmmaker Tim Tsai, who was working on a documentary about the infamous 1979 clash between Vietnamese fishermen and the KKK in Seadrift, Texas. Ha did her masterвЂ™s thesis on how the Vietnamese came to dominate AmericaвЂ™s nail salon industry and her doctoral thesis on how Vietnamese fishermen moved into the Texas shrimping and fishing industry in the 1980s. вЂњIt has the language and the tools to articulate the things that are going on around us.вЂќ вЂњSociology helps us to see the world in a way thatвЂ™s outside our own little bubble,вЂќ she said. Given a fresh start, she decided to pursue sociology to better understand the social, economic, psychological and other forces that shape societies like her own Vietnamese-American community in Houston.
